My Nonprofit Reviews

Michele
Review for The Humane Society of the United States, Washington, DC, USA
My honest experience is that no one should be duped into thinking HSUS helps animals. They have falsely alleged their involvement in dire situations (the Vick dogs, Hurricane Katrina, and others) in order to raise millions in donations that are then used for multi-million dollar salaries and lobbying to end pet ownership. The public does not understand that despite the name, the HSUS does NOT operate ONE single shelter and less than 4% of their donations go to support ANY shelter nationwide. They are registered lobbyists in all 50 states. They are expert manipulators and their CEO has links to domestic terrorist organizations such as ALF.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
raising copious amounts of money and misleading people like Oprah Winfrey.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
completely revamp it, fire nearly everyone, and actually use the money they have to support animals in need.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
single minded, brainwashed, and incapable of considering alternate positions.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
It already does, it has 91 million. It uses them to pay its officers millions, place false advertisements, and solicit more money to lobby for bad laws. It SHOULD give it to local underfunded shelters and - you know - HELP ANIMALS.
Ways to make it better...
HSUS would be reclassified as a lobbyist group, not a charity, and be forced to stop using "Humane Society" to deceive the public.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
their deceptiveness.
One thing I'd also say is that...
everyone should donate LOCALLY to shelters that actually house and care for animals - NOT TO LOBBYISTS!!!
