The Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable is a ten year old 501 C3 public charity and education organization. In June, 2011 we launched our Impact Micro Award Program. Since our launch in June we have awarded 14 Impact Micro Awards to community organizations that fulfill our mission of working to build self-reliance and self-sustainability in underserved communities in the areas of violence prevention, at risk youth training, leadership mentoring and tutoring, financial education, health and nutrition awareness, arts, cultural and media training, college financial support, and civic engagement.

The micro awards are not charity awards but awards designed to aid the organizations and individuals to build community sustainability with money for basic necessities such as printing, phone, staff and volunteer expenses, and travel funds. These groups rely on individual donations and have limited or no access to foundation or corporate grants or funding. We aim to fill this vital funding niche.

Our goal for the remainder of 2011 is to make 25 to 30 more awards and to increase the dollar amount of each award. We are asking for your support to help us achieve our goal.

We firmly believe in strict financial accountability and transparency. Our executive officers receive no salaries or administrative expenses. This is to insure that nearly every dollar that we receive that is tax deductible goes directly to aid organizations and individuals that are diligently working for sustainability in underserved communities. We have received financial commitments from Wells Fargo Foundation, Operation Hope, and the Weingart Foundation. Impact Micro Awards Make a Difference

Community based organizations need appropriately-sized, targeted amounts of money. They need grants that build confidence and fund core needs but that don’t overwhelm their capacities—or worse, corrupt their agendas.
Impact Micro Awards which are a few hundred dollars can have a big impact. When strategically awarded at the right time to the right organization, a small grant can be exactly what community organizations need to grow in reach and make a difference.
Because our aim is to make a number of seed awards each year, we are able to spread our resources out. We are able to support hundreds of new solutions for building community sustainability, each one appropriate to the context and culture of the community or neighborhood.
While tangible success stories illustrate the potency of Micro Awards, it’s the unseen outcomes that best tell the story. The most rewarding is how a seed award can boost individual and neighborhood pride.
It’s the kind of thing that makes a huge difference in the destiny of a neighborhood. People want to be seen and heard and recognized. And they want to contribute in meaningful ways.

Impact Micro Awards allow us to:
• Make grants quickly, with minimal bureaucracy
• Provide funding that is nonrestrictive—that promotes creativity and freedom of action
• Grant amounts large enough to take action, but small enough that they do not overwhelm the groups or create undue burdens for financial management
• Fund a multiplicity of solutions to build sustainable communities in dozens of different places
