Review for Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, Burlingame, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

We’ve been long time donors to this organization. My wife and I are both life long animal lovers, and PHS-SPCA has shown that they are of a similar mindset. Which is not something we take lightly. We thank them all often and have adopted there many times as well. We love PHS!

PHS-SPCA is so much more than just a shelter for lost dogs and cats. The passion and drive that is shown by everyone that works there, from the head of the organization right down to the ones that clean the kennels and cages, is so inspirational and honest, and obviously it's all a labor of love. This, in turn, ripples down to the fact that there are more than 1,400 volunteers that only want to help make the lives of every animal in PHS' care, better. Not a simple task. Many of the animals here are traumatized and depressed. We all are there to help try and make their stay a positive and rewarding experience--and adoptable. Plus, PHS is also a wildlife rescue and rehab facility too. This, in short, is an amazing place that also makes for a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

I've been volunteering at PHS for well over 10 years now. We adopted our 1st dog, Bella, in 1980, and you couldn't have asked for a better companion. We've also adopted 4 cats and 3 birds over the years and our latest dog, Stella Blue, is one in a million. And that goes for the staff and all the volunteers there too. I know there are some great animal shelters out there, and there are probably some mediocre ones too, but PHS-SPCA is like no other. I not only love what I do there, I also love observing how much thought and care and unselfish devotion and effort is given to help all the animals that can't speak for themselves. This is not just an animal shelter, it's an example of how showing a little kindness and respect can change the world for those in need. I feel lucky to be associated with this organization!

I've been volunteering here for many years, and you couldn't find a nicer group of people to work with and interact with. What's more, it shows on the many animals up for adoption there. Between the staff and the VERY many volunteers there, most all of the dogs and cats get "out time" and socialization daily. That is so important. PHS-SPCA is a top notch organization that treats everyone, including potential adopters, the volunteers and all their "guests" with great respect. Why else would so many hundreds of people and young adults volunteer their time so freely, if it wasn't. Plus, we have adopted the best dog in the whole world from there too!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Yes.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Put a vending machine in the break room.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I've discovered there are very many sentient beings here with the same agenda as me--and that's a good thing.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Always leave feeling wonderful, and wishing I could do more.
