Review for Operation Write Home, Federal Way, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I found this organization through Facebook when my son first deployed to Iraq. It is a terrific organization in that it supports our military but it also strengthens the families as they wait for their loved ones return. One can donate as few or as many card as they wish and know that she is making a viable difference.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

God used this organization in my life at a time when I needed the outlet. It really helped me get through my son's deployment by giving me a positive way to be involved. I knew my cards were going to young men and women just like him. One box went to him to share with his unit. He even got an "Any Hero" card made and written in by people he knew--his parents! I have another son deploying to another front. It's good to know Operation Write Home is there--for both of us.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

See that the president/founder could draw a salary and be able to leave her day job.

Would you volunteer for this group again?

Definitely

For the time you spent, how much of an impact did you feel your work or activity had?

Life-changing

Did the organization use your time wisely?

Very Well

Would you recommend this group to a friend?

Definitely

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

I'm very happy with the set up they have. They are always seeking new ways to communicate with their card makers and even added things like a once weekly live Ustream.com "TV" show. Fun bunch.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I was a beginning card maker at the time I started volunteering. I have learned so many new techniques, tools, design skills. Their blogs are so loaded with good info. My card making has improved immensely since May of 2010!

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Great! And continues to do so. It's a giant circle of encouragement. To me because I get a great creative outlet and can bless a hero. To the hero because someone thought of him or her. To their loved ones because they have something tangible to hold, read, keep from their soldier that brings them closer. Then back around to me when they (fairly often) post on the organizations Facebook wall or Hero blog.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2011

Role:  Volunteer & I have made around 2,000 cards for this organization in the last 1.5 years. I have also volunteered to help run their large "blog hops" , which occur three or four times a year. .
