Review for Puente a La Salud Comunitaria, The Woodlands, TX, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I first learned about Puente a la Salud Comunitaria (Puente) in 2008 while living in Oaxaca, and since then I have been constantly intrigued, inspired and impressed by the work carried out and the results achieved. I have been volunteering with Puente for five months in the area of communications, and I have experienced firsthand the strong organizational structure and effective participatory approach employed in all aspects of Puente's work. I volunteer with Puente because I believe in the work done and see that the results achieved positively impact partner communities. Puente is a solid organization that I highly respect; I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute.

Review for Limitless Horizons Ixil, Inc., Santa Cruz, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I first learned about the work of Limitless Horizons Ixil in 2009, and have been continuously impressed by their dedication and work in Chajul, Guatemala. The context in which they work is an extremely difficult one, with numerous social, political, economic and historic factors creating barriers for local youth. However, LHI has found an extremely efficient way of turning difficulties into opportunities, thus supporting local youth with the necessary tools to move forward in their education and become inspirational leaders on many levels an in a variety of contexts. LHI employs a multifaceted approach to education that is both culturally relevant and motivational for local youth. During the past two years I have followed their progress, and, as I mentioned, I am constantly impressed by their progress and work in the area of education. From creating a community library to actively seeking support for local students, LHI is creating change in a major way while opening doors of opportunity for the community that they serve.

I wouldn't make any changes. I think that LHI is on the right path and continuous to practice cultural respect and sensitivity. Their education programs are based on local cultural needs, and participants are involved in every aspect of the programs that affect them.
