Review for Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County, Watsonville, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Fiscally, this is the way charity should be run! Most $ goes to programs, comparatively little to administration and fundraising. It is a rare pleasure to see a charity have more than 90% (94.5%!!) to programs. I will happily increase my charitable giving to this organization, as I pull away from organizations that are distributing more to administrators and less to programs. Nice job. I hope they will keep it up!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have derived benefit from the joy of giving.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Primarily keep their excellent history of minimizing admin and fundraising costs to a minimum, while distributing the majority of their proceeds to programs. I appreciate not receiving excessive donation requests (I only need and want one a year).

Was your donation impactful?

How likely is it that you would recommend that a friend donate to this group?

How likely are you to donate to this group again?

Definitely

What specific problem, purpose, priority, or project prompted your gift?

Annual gift giving.

Why did you make your donation at this time?

Decided to apportion half of my gift giving mid way through the year rather than all in December, as have done in the past.

What would you tell others about this organization?

They are doing vastly better fiscally than most charities these days, giving 94.5% to programs while keeping admin and fund raising costs to a minimum. And, the purpose of the charity is great, too. Join me by contributing.

Review for FINCA International, Inc., Washington, DC, USA

Rating: 3 stars

I am disappointed to see that administrative costs have jumped substantially, which has directly impacted the % going to programs. I fear that this once excellent and inspired program is now lapsing into greed of administrators, with a loss of vision of what this charity was all about: helping those less fortunate, rather than those most fortunate. Although I already partially donated my annual gift (before reviewing here), I will have to seriously reconsider whether to donate the balance of my customary donation this year. I'm sorry to have to say that. My ratings of the charity have diminished accordingly.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

only from the good feelings of giving.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Significantly reduce administrative overhead, which has skyrocketed, and put the money back into programs!

What specific problem, purpose, priority, or project prompted your gift?

Administrative costs seem to be skimming off the top and are deleteriously impacting funds going to programs, so, although I gave a portion of my annual gift (based on the overall program design and concept), I may not fund the balance.

Why did you make your donation at this time?

Part of annual contribution.

What would you tell others about this organization?

Watch out! Much more of the funds are now going to lining the pockets of administrators. Be sure to evaluate through charity navigator before sending money.

Review for Doctors Without Borders USA Inc, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 3 stars

The cost of $.13 to receive a $1 donation seems high and unnecessary. I received mailers at least monthly, if not more. I finally requested that they stop sending requests except once a year, which they have done, fortunately. I have always happily donated to this charity, but am now reconsidering. I think they can do better at increasing the amount of their funds going to programs, rather than fundraising. They should evaluate how effective their fundraising strategies really are.

What specific problem, purpose, priority, or project prompted your gift?

Fundraising expenses and lower $ to programs is what moved my ratings to unsure from definitely or likely, as well as my overall rating.

Why did you make your donation at this time?

I made a partial donation as part of my annual giving. I must evaluate whether they deserve the balance of my customary donation this year.

What would you tell others about this organization?

Yes, but with the caution to check Charity Navigator, to evaluate expenses in relationship to funding of programs.

Thank you for your support and for sharing your concerns about Doctors Without Borders' cost of fundraising. We value your feedback and want to address your concerns specifically and directly. Doctors Without Borders' executive staff and board of directors are highly conscious of the cost of fundraising and make every effort to keep that cost low. At $.13 to raise a dollar our cost of fundraising exceeds nonprofit industry standards, and is comparable to that of other humanitarian aid organizations. Please note that the figures that you are referring to are from our 2009 audited financials. That year, as the economy dipped, our fundraising team had to make significant efforts to raise the revenue needed to support our programs, as donor response declined from prior years. With those additional efforts our cost of fundraising slightly increased. In our 2010 financials, you will see that our cost to raise a dollar has decreased to less than $.10, this is because of the significant amounts of support we received in response to the earthquake in Haiti. External factors influence our cost to raise a dollar from year to year. In order to help bring down the cost of fundraising the best thing that donors can do is to become a Field Partner (monthly donor). You will receive less mail, which means less cost, and you provide a guarantee of regular, predictable, and unrestricted funds for our projects. You can find more information regarding our Field Partner program on our website: https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/monthly.cfm? We appreciate your concern and hope this sheds a bit more light on the question of our cost of fundraising. If you would like to discuss this further please contact our Donor Services department at Donations@newyork.msf.org.

Review for CARE (Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere), Atlanta, GA, USA

Rating: 3 stars

I am disappointed that the CEO makes $400,000+ a year. While the charity does do well regarding overhead costs vs program expenditures, I am more closely reviewing finances before my charitable giving. I will have to think long and hard before I donate to Care again, given reduced ratings and what I consider an unnecessarily high pay for the top administrator.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

have not personally experienced results, other than pride in giving.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Reduce high pay of administrator(s).
