I have been involved in Literacy efforts in Florida for over 14 years, serving as Board Chair of The Florida Literacy Coalition for 8, and a founding committee member of the Palm Beach Literacy Coalition. I also Chaired Rotary Literacy for our District. Prior to that I was K-College Manager for the IBM Corporation. Throughout these experiences I have never been so thrilled as to see the work done by Volunteer USA Foundation for youth. Through their Mentoring programs(200K + mentors), and the Family Literacy programs(30 programs, I believe) funded throughout Florida, Florida's young people are becoming more competitive and raising their self confidence, academic and character strengths. Because of these efforts young learners have either a mentor or a parent as their support team for self direction and improvement. Volunteer Florida takes a lot of the fund raising burden off of the participating local volunteers so they can concentrate on the mission of helping! This very professional group of volunteers and staff at Volunteer USA Florida is set to expand to other states, and it can't happen soon enough!
