Review for The Humane Society of the United States, Washington, DC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I find it humorous when I hear people oppose HSUS because they aren't giving enough of their money to local shelters and local humane societies. I want to say to those misinformed individuals: Do you think Walmart should give part of their profits to Walgreens? After all they both share "Wal" in the name and sell the same products? Since Walmart is the bigger company, by your formula, they ought to be passing some of their money to Walgreens? That is precisely what these misguided individuals are asking of HSUS. Despite the name correlation, make it known -- there is NO AFFILIATION whatsoever between HSUS and local humane societies, so don't be confused by the name similarity. My local humane society started DECADES before HSUS was even formed! Further, the overlap of their initiatives is small. Local humane societies help pets -- this is only one of many areas that HSUS tackles. HSUS needs every penny they receive to address and solve the widely complex and enormous welfare abuses ACROSS OUR COUNTRY that involve BILLIONS OF ANIMALS. I advise everyone to read HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle's book, The Bond, to get the clear picture of what I am referring to. His book is a thorough presentation of the animal welfare issues surrounding us all. You will also quickly get a sense of Pacelle's honesty, integrity and passion for ending animal abuse, which comes through vividly, and you will see why HSUS is an organization to be praised and cherished. I look forward to making my annual donation to them every year, and always wish I could give more.

Also, a quick and easy way to keep up on the issues HSUS is currently involved in is to subscribe to Wayne Pacelle's blog (go to their website for the link on the home page). Don't base you're opinions on the angry, misguided reviewers here -- see for yourself how wrong they are! I look forward to receiving Wayne's blog via email everyday. I'm always impressed by his professionalism and unrelenting dedication to what should be changed, and what must change. We are a better society because of HSUS. Lest we forget, animal cruelty is the precursor to people cruelty. It was no surprise to learn in a county in my state where puppy mills increased over the years, so did the domestic violence. We need to stop violence to people before it starts by ending animal abuses on all fronts. We need to protect our waterways from factory farm waste runoff (or you can say goodbye to ever taking a dip, or going fishing -- read the book Animal Factory). We need to safeguard our health against the recurring food recalls (thanks factory farms). These are large scale initiatives that only an organization like HSUS can tackle. Having first-hand experience volunteering for HSUS, and following initiatives they are involved in across the country, I can say with the utmost confidence, HSUS is fully worthy of being considered a GREAT NONPROFIT!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing the ballot initiative issues come to fruition. There is less animal abuse in my state because of HSUS's involvement. Livestock animals and other animals are far better off, and will experience far less abuse.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

require Wayne Pacelle NEVER leave his post as CEO!

What specific problem, purpose, priority, or project prompted your gift?

They made national news for uncovering animal abuse and I was so appalled by their findings, I wanted to reward them for their work. My donations will continue as long as I am able, now that I've become fully knowledgeable of all the good they do.

Why did you make your donation at this time?

See previous answer.

What would you tell others about this organization?

They are successful at changing laws that effect billions of animals, and tangential to it, improve the safety of our food, water and air.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2011

Role:  Donor & I gathered signatures for a ballot initiative to stop abuses on factory farms. I also donate to HSUS.
