Here's the real truth: They may help a lot of people, but they have been maintaining a facade. Most residents have loose connections to the VFW; the military families are virtually nonexistant. If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Drop the facade. Not many residents are from outside of Eaton Rapids, let alone out-of-state. It is really a home for Michigan single mothers (as if they don't already have a lot of state aid).

Families qualify to live at the National Home in three ways: 1) military families or children during deployment; 2) veteran families while the veteran completes VA Vocational Rehabilitation; 3) single-parent families or residential children whose parent, grandparent or great-grandparent is a VFW or Ladies Auxiliary member in good standing (or was at the time of his or her passing).
