Review for The Humane Society of the United States, Washington, DC, USA
The Humane Society of the United States is my favorite organization on the planet. I love that they include all animals in their efforts to confront cruelty, that they focus on celebrating animals (in spite of all the heartbreak), and above all, that they are incredibly effective at what they do.
Although they have impressive animal rescue and sheltering operations, the main focus of the organization is to address the many issues facing animals "upstream" of the end results (homelessness, abandonment, cruelty, etc). By getting more humane laws on the books, changing public perceptions, or exposing standardized cruelties that go mostly unnoticed by the average consumer, HSUS is affecting change in a way that creates the most positive, long-term change for the most animals possible.
I've been a member since I was financially independent, and have recently become more involved with the organization. I've volunteered at events, conducted volunteer activities online, and written letters to the editor of my local paper regarding humane legislation (which I've learned about from HSUS). I recently had the opportunity to attend Taking Action for Animals (TAFA), the largest animal advocacy conference in the nation.
TAFA was an amazing and unique experience that combined learning, inspiration, networking, and friendship. I got to attend workshops ranging from farmed animal issues to lobbying my elected officials.
Overall, I can't say enough about this organization, it's dedicated people, or its leadership. HSUS has truly inspired me to be a great advocate for animals and given me the tools to be as effective as possible.
More Feedback
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
-regards to animals raised for food in California, who now have some humane laws to protect them thanks to Prop 2 and HSUS. -my community where animal fighting is a problem and HSUS is pushing for stricter anti-animal fighting legislation at state and federal levels. -the perceptions of my community in regards to adopting a shelter pet.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
have local chapters.
