Review for GreatNonprofits, Redwood City, CA, USA

Rating: 1 stars

This site is an unmonitored disaster. It has the potential to cause serious damage to legitimate non-profit groups - and probably already has to many. Any psycho with a grievance - real or imagined - can easily create multiple identities and use them to slander the organization and even it's other clients by name with no oversight at all. Take control and monitor this site - or shut it down. You are doing a disservice to all concerned with the mess you have created.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Watched a good organization get slandered repeatedly

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Establish some quality control - or shut it down

I found bc.org shortly after I was diagnosed 5 years ago. The site has been an invaluable source of info and support for me. The discussion board is where I found all the practical information and hints from those who had been there/done that made it much easier to get through treatment. Even more important I met other women who were going through the same thing and those who were past treatment and thriving. It’s not a stretch to say that BCO helped keep me sane and grounded during the worst of it all.

The BCO Discussion Board is an international forum with a great diversity in its members. Members sometimes disagree with each other. When you post a comment it is always entirely possible that somebody will come along with a different viewpoint. That someone may even be a member that you dislike for other reasons not related to the subject at hand. Nobody is confined to just one little corner of the board. People who do not want to deal with such diversity of opinion are not going to be happy there. Those who actually feel ‘bullied’ by such disagreement would be happier with a blog or Facebook page where they have total control of the content. Discussion Boards are not for everyone.

Sometimes the disagreements do get out of hand. This is a group of women who are dealing with cancer and the effects of its treatment - getting cranky is not unheard of. The moderators are getting quicker all the time at shutting down the arguments that get out of hand.

The moderators of the site have recently been increased from 1 to 3 and in my experience it is possible to reach one of them via a private message in less than an hour on a 24/7 basis now.

They have also gotten control of the past misuse of a ‘report this post’ function that was intended for spam but which was being misused to delete the comments of other members who some didn’t like, or when they disagreed with their point of view, or just didn’t like the way something was said. Now the moderators review each report and make a decision as to whether the post broke any BCO rules or not. Members can no longer immediately get another member suspended or banned by an automated program without moderator review. Some are not happy about losing that ability. However, what we do have is an ‘Ignore’ function which blocks out the posts of someone you would prefer not to deal with.

All in all – an active and vital discussion board and moderators who are still working hard to make it even better.

Learned a lot of invaluable medical and practical information for dealing with my breast cancer. Meet many wonderful women who I would never have had a chance to meet otherwise.

I would like to see more 'disclaimers' from the moderators when some controversial alternative treatments are promoted in lieu of conventional medicine. Many members feel this is dangerous advice and it has been a hotbed of arguments.
