Review for Arts Ignite Inc, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

ASTEP changed my life. I remember working with a student who didn't speak English very well and no matter how hard the teachers and I tried, he just wouldn't budge. Each time during journaling though, I would notice he would start writing a little bit more than the day before. Soon enough, he was participating in improvisation exercises in Drama class and dancing in the front row for dance choreography class. Using the ASTEP mission statement, as teachers we created a camp that allowed for this student to experiment with all forms of expression, despite the language barrier that existed. At the final performance, right before he went on stage to play his solo guitar gig, he looked into my eyes and said- I will never go into something with a negative attitude. It was in that single moment that I knew that even if these students don't go on to be famous performers on Broadway or incredible musicians playing at Rockefeller Center, they now had the confidence to take on the world. Without ASTEP, that wouldn't have been possible.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

each of the children I come back to visit each year- whether they've now applied to college, or had the confidence to speak up in class- a positive impact is definitely visible.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

demand that my staff had a month long vacation... because they deserve it!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the compassionate individuals I have met as part of the program and the long lasting friendships I will forever have with them.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

the most warm-hearted and passionate people I have ever met. A sincere passion for change is present.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

change future generations to become compassionate, active individuals of society.

Ways to make it better...

it wouldn't have to end.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

visibility and funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

ASTEP is the greatest non-profit I have ever volunteered for.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2008
