Review for Organization for Autism Research, Arlington, VA, USA
Three years ago, I really had no idea what Autism was until a doctor diagnosed my son with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although, my wife and I left that doctors office knowing what Autism was, we did not know what we should do after his diagnosis. Like many parents of newly diagnosed children with a disability we wanted to read every book, article, and website about it. Many of these books or articles were written in such a technical or medical language for me to understand. What I needed was a guide to direct us on a path to advocacy.
The Organization for Autism Research has written several guidebooks that provide parents with detailed information that everyone can understand. These guidebooks serve parents of Autistic children as a very resourceful tool and I personally find the resources inside instrumental. As an advocate for Jacob and to other military families who have an autistic child I often refer to this book and make every attempt to get it in the hands of parents, especially for those whose children recently received a diagnosis of an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. For all who read this post I cannot tell you enough how important these guidebooks can be.
