Review for Central Maryland Ecumenical Council Inc, Baltimore, MD, USA

Rating: 4 stars

CMEC is the successor of Maryland Churches United. MCU was created in 1972 when the Maryland Council of Churches was dissolved. The board of CMEC includes appointed representatives from the local association, conference, diocese or other judicatory of denominations (Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox) that have congregations and services in the State of Maryland.
As of June 6, 2011, CMEc was one of the 6,000+ exempt non profits that has its exemption revoked. This was caused by an error in unstanding itself as an association of churches, exempt from filing 990's. IRS thought otherwise. Re-application was begun immediately, and the board is taking the opportunity to revise by-laws, and update its policies.
Currently, CMEC is not soliciting donations from private individuals. Congregations and judicatories continue to contribute during this re-filing period.
CMEC is affiliated with the National Council of Churches of Christ, and also have affilitted partners from other faiths.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Back in 1990 I received one of CMEC's ecumenical service awards. The organization continues to promote ecumenical leadership and service. It has also established an annual Interfaith Leadership Award. I've experieniced CMEC's effectiveness in bringing together the leaders of Maryland denominations, and having a strong voice on religious, ethical and moral issues.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Expand its area of service to support ecumenical service agencies and congregations that support direct services to those in need. I would also expand its service area, since there is no over all state council and CMEC limits its programs to Central Maryland.

Role:  Board Member & I serve as president of the board.
