Review for The Freecycle Network, Tucson, AZ, USA
When Freecycle™ corporate owners requested that they be allowed to take control of Freecycle™-Palmdale, I declined their proposal, as being an attempt to redistribute the benefits of our local volunteer's efforts, into their centralized entity. After about a year of research and careful deliberations, I dropped the affiliation with Freecycle™, at their demand. I changed our group's name to remain a free and independent group of thoughtful members mindfully gifting our useful surpluses. In my opinion, Freecycle™ has unresolved issues, of loyalty and trademark$, that seem to have replaced the responsible and generous intentions, they promoted. Their communications to me now have a, "Notice: The information contained in this message and any attachments is privileged and confidential and protected from disclosure. Any dissemination, distribution or copying of this communication is strictly prohibited." Is this suppression of our reasonable freedoms an attempt to hide their repressive management activities? I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Watching Freecycle™ as it has evolved into MyFreecycle™ and becomes the, "One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to find them. One Ring to bring them all. And in the darkness bind them." - J.R.R. Tolkien
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Enlarge the board of directors with more creative thinkers and allow the freedom of diverse opinions to evolve Freecycle™ into higher and better forms. We started life on this planet in the primordial mud. Diversity, was the only way; we could rise up.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
The privilege of moderating our local group and witnessing some enthusiastic generosity from our local members in giving a second chancees at usefulness to our discards. Live, Learn, and $hare.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Unresponsive, to my email requests, unrelenting, in their espoused views, uninterested, in considering new ideas, and unaccommodating, to any variation of their system.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Avoid looking at, and better conceal their real management style problems, from themselves.
Ways to make it better...
OurFreecycle♥ required only our generosity. MyFreecycle™ involvement requires compliance with so many, and even some unwritten rules. Gentle water moves mountains; patiently.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
The constraints of narrow thinking, and the abuse of absolute control by the Freecycle Network's owner, suppresses his volunteer's reasonable communications and enthusiasm, with a, "My way or the highway." attitude.
One thing I'd also say is that...
The Freecycle Network™ and MyFreecycle™ are confusingly similar; but not the same as, the generosity of the thousands of volunteers that worked diligently in their efforts to create and manage all the local "Freecycling" that happens on Yahoo! Groups.
