Review for World Vision International, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I think World Vision is a wonderful organization, and I am thankful to be able to donate to it.

I am a donor who visited the child I sponsor in India. I was very impressed by the work World Vision does. World Vision operating in India is run by Indian nationals. They were professional, yet able to relate to the people in the village where my child lives.

One thing people may not understand about child sponsorship is that when a donor sponsors a child, he or she is really sponsoring not just that one child, but the whole village where the child lives. The village is helped, and this benefits the child more than if only that individual child is helped. However, World Vision makes it possible for a donor to provide extra help to the child if he or she wishes.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

In the village where my child lives, World Vision drilled a well so that that village people have access to clean water. It has helped village children access education and medical care. World Vision also helped people stucco the inside walls of their dirt houses.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would wish they would understand how deeply some people connect with the specific children they sponsor, and to realize that this is a good thing.

Role:  Donor & I visited the little girl I sponsor in India.

Review for The Rescue Mission, Tacoma, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I am a former volunteer who is currently an employee, but I am not writing this under duress, and no one else in my agency is likely to see it.

I love this organization, and I work here because I believe in this organization and the work it does. The Rescue Mission in Tacoma truly helps people who are homeless. It not only addresses emergency needs, but it also offers programs that help people leave homelessness to lead fulfilling, self-sufficient, and productive lives in the community.

The Rescue Mission offers a free eight-month residential alcohol/drug addiction recovery program that has changed countless lives. With any addiction, some people have to try many times before they can actually quit. But those who become free from addiction are new people, and not only they, but also their loved ones and the whole community benefit from their transformed lives. This program is open to families so that parents do not have to leave their children in order to receive treatment.

The Rescue Mission recently constructed a beautiful facility that provides 36 emergency shelter and transitional housing units for unaccompanied women and families with children. There are more homeless families than people realize. Most homeless families do their best to keep people from knowing they are homeless because in addition to being embarrassed about their situation, they are afraid that their children will be taken away from them if people find out. While in emergency shelter and transitional housing, clients receive case management and other services and supports. Case managers help clients set goals and develop action plans that list steps they need to take to achieve their goals.

Clients in transitional housing who have not graduated from high school receive adult basic education and/or GED (high school equivalency diploma) test preparation. Many others enroll in vocational training or college to obtain skills and diplomas that will lead to higher paying jobs.

A dynamic youth program engages children and teens who reside in Rescue Mission facilities because their families are homeless. The program emphasizes the importance of education and staying in school. After-school homework help is provided every weekday during the school year.

I volunteered at this organization before working here, and I accepted employment here because I saw how much The Rescue Mission helps people in need.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would find more people with minority racial backgrounds for our Board of Directors.

Role:  Volunteer & as a volunteer, I tutored adults in math. As an employee, I write grant proposals.
