Review for Organization for Autism Research, Arlington, VA, USA
Many people ask me why I am such an advocate for OAR (Organization for Autism Research) and the work that they do. While that seems like an easy question to answer, reality is that it is because of a number of factors.
First, the engagement and support the team gives to those that are active donors and volunteers. I am both as I am an active Run for Autism team member. They are very well organized, very informative, extremely motivating and fun people to work with. This type of engagement from a charity is paramount in helping you keep your focus while fundraising as well as keeping you informed on what they are doing with the money raised.
Second, the reasons they exist. OAR has a strong mission statement, extremely pertinent core values and a solid strategic plan on how to give back to those that are affected by the autism spectrum. It is rewarding to know that money that they raise goes first and foremost to applied research. This is research to not only better understand Autism’s root cause and treatment options but also to help better understand if there are precautions to help prevent it in the future. I am also very pleased that they have expanded their conference options to be the “conference on wheels” approach which partners with local organizations to bring cutting edge tracks closer to home rather than holding one large conference that is tough to get away for. Lastly the education they provide. Funding from the money raised gives back in areas such as scholarships, educational aides (The Autism Guide for Educators and the College guides for those with Autism) and much more.
Lastly, as a parent with a child on the spectrum it feels good to know that I am helping make a difference. The easy part of selecting a charity to work with is finding a cause you believe in, the hard part is knowing which one really can make that impact that you hope to deliver. OAR is a leading edge organization that is doing great things nationally and with more supporters helping fund their initiatives only time will be a deterrent of the good they will deliver.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Educational opportunities provided in my community through the "Conference on Wheels" approach. The partnership with the local organization to bring cutting edge Autism speakers locally.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Expand! They are a wonderful organization that quite simply may be ready to expand and even become a larger household name. I know that is easier said then done but to it may be that time.
