Review for The Humane Society of the United States, Washington, DC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Having volunteered several times for their disaster/emergency response team, I can say that they honestly make a huge impact, and nearly everywhere they send aid, people's perspectives about the organization is changed for the better. So much misinformation is out there, so many people trying to mislead and badmouth because the money doesn't usually go directly to local shelters... the money goes to helping at dozens- hundreds some years, I think- of emergency situations or disaster responses. Local shelters and local governments aren't able to handle the burden of cost or personnel to deal with things that HSUS does- their budgets just don't stretch to cover that kind of thing, and it's not something that HSUS can just 'toss money at and stay out' because government just doesn't work that way, so forget it all you Humanewatchers who'd rather HSUS just donate the money and get out. Local places, like Joplin, need the expertise and experience HSUS staff, contractors, and volunteers can bring to the table. A random volunteer off the street may not have the training necessary to deal with disaster victims, and the national government/FEMA has regulations now that mean locales /have/ to know if their workers and volunteers are able to handle the situation. And HSUS trains their volunteers so that they are able to do whatever is needed. They are awesome, and work so hard to help thousands upon thousands of animals of all species every year.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

national animal disaster response

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand the emergency response team- I know they are stretched thin enough already, I wish they would expand the team so they can respond whenever they are called.

Role:  Volunteer & Volunteered.
