Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Human Services

Mission: For more than 30 years, Fidos has existed for two simple reasons: -to enhance the quality of life for persons with mobility impairments, hearing loss and veterans with PTSD in the Baltimore-Washington area by partnering them with specially trained assistance dogs -to improve the quality of life for people in healthcare/educational facilities through the use of well-trained therapy dogs who offer unconditional affection and attention, including the Fidos Dogs Educating & Assisting Readers (aka DEAR Program) taking place in local schools and libraries. Fidos DEAR Program improves reading skills by encouraging children to read one-on-one with a Fidos Therapy Dog and Trained Volunteer. -to build disability awareness and develop healthy and helpful relationships with dogs and their handlers for high school students through our Junior Volunteer Program which has an excellent reputation and benefits for young people who desire to perform voluntary community service.

Fidos for Freedom matched Monty with my younger son Mark in 2012. They had 5 beautiful years together before Mark earned his angel wings. Monty allowed Mark to soar in the 5 years they had together. Now my older son David has been matched with Della; a smaller, female version of Monty (black labs). I know that Della will help David to soar as well. The attached photo is of Della performing deep pressure therapy on David's legs to minimize the pain. ❤️

As the President of Fidos For Freedom I am continually amazed at the passion, love, and dedication that the volunteers provide for this extraordinary agency.

Diane Bernier, Executive Director has worked her way up from being a volunteer to now dedicating her life to this important mission, which is changing peoples lives

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for people in the Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan community by providing specially trained hearing dogs, service dogs, combat-related PTSD dogs, and therapy dogs.

Fidos also educates the public about individuals with disabilities and about the benefits of assistance dogs and therapy dogs and the work that these specially trained dogs do for individuals with disabilities, children with reading difficulties, and patients in health care facilities. But most importantly, through love and dedication, Fidos changes lives.

I have watched as our clients have had their lives enhanced with the addition of dogs.

I have witnessed the sorrow that the entire agency feels when a client or their dog has passed. And most importantly, I celebrate the volunteers who truly want to change peoples lives, without any thought of compensation.

I am proud to be part of this agency and invite any and all to join in the celebration in the journey of life.

Every now and then you come across an agency that truly is trying to change the individual worlds of the people that they affect.

At Fido’s For Freedom there is a universe of caring, compassionate volunteers whose only goal is to make those that have challenges in the world because of their limitations, just a little bit better by selecting, loving, training dogs for people in need.

Thank you, Fido’s For Freedom!❤️

I have followed the stories of dogs helping people, either with mobility issues, hearing loss, or PTSD. I am always amazed at the bond that grows between dog and human. Also how having the dog in their lives gives people back their independence. Way to go Fidos!!

Fidos for Freedom is an outstanding organization that does wonders for people who need service dogs. Fidos is one of the Captain John Odber Ride for the Fallen charity partners. We donate to fund service dogs for Veterans.

This organization provides so much help to so many people. The dedicated volunteers really make all their programs run so beautifully. Those they help and the dogs that help them are inspirations to us all.

"Actions and words are the windows through which the heart is seen." And at Fidos for Freedom the hearts are all big and their program is wonderful. I have seen so many people and animals helped by Fidos. It is a very worthy charity.
