Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Homeless & Housing, Homeless Shelters, Housing Rehabilitation, Mental Health, Residential Mental Health Treatment, Substance Abuse Treatment

Mission: Since 1962, the Union Gospel Mission has provided food, clothing, shelter, and a life-changing gospel message to Sacramento's homeless and struggling populations. The Mission has grown to serve more than 9,000 meals monthly. Every night, we shelter 84 men and assist with mail service, haircuts, and showers continuously. The gospel is shared every night before dinner for our homeless guests by church groups who also volunteer to serve dinner. Our intensive 10-month Men’s New Life Program is free of charge and accommodates 24 men with a Bible-structured curriculum. A vocational training and job placement program helps men find new beginnings, restoring dignity to broken lives, and providing hope. Our Women’s Clothes Closet provides showers and a huge variety of essential items such as clothing, shoes, purses, and hygiene items to assist them with their daily needs, help them prepare for work, and provide for their children. We provide food boxes to seniors and families, including special holiday meals for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. UGM’s Mission Statement: We aim to MEET people’s practical needs, TRAIN biblically, and SEND transformed lives back into society and the local church, prepared for life.

I started working at the Union Gospel Mission in the late '70s and just retired in 2020. I still come to UGM on Thursday mornings with my wife for her to help out in the Women's Clothing Closet ministry. It has been a very exciting and rewarding experience working, mostly, with men who were in our Rehab. Program. I have had the pleasure of seeing many men's lives completely changed thanks to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. I did some counseling and building relationships which is a monumental part of our ministry. And, the friends that I have made through the years of this ministry will be a lasting relationship throughout eternity! I am grateful to see the work continuing as it always has with the Gospel being the center of all that we do! (In the pictures, I am wearing the old name badge, a couple of pictures of me through the years at UGM, and then my wife, Anne, from many years ago when she was working in the UGM Kitchen.)
