In April of 2019 I was diagnosed with cancer. This was not possible - then reality became extremely serious. We plowed thru this as a family- armoring up for what was to come…Needless to say it propelled us into the trenches. With my oncologist nomination - we were on our way to a vacation in the Poconos during covid. We were greeted by a group of people with open arms who assisted us in settling in. This was the first opportunity I had as a cancer patient to forget about my normal world at home of treatments, illness, bills, appointments and work. At first for me, with much trepidation of being social or involved I stayed in. My parents got involved and soon coaxed me out of the world of isolation I had become very used to.To date this as one of the most amazing experiences I have had. To give yourself permission to become a kid again; the sense of freedom, laughter and connecting with people who were truly genuine. It was all about US, The patients and their families. FPS , allowed us to have as much involvement or as little involvement as we ( the patient) required. Yet they openly took the families under their wings, Encouraging and allowing them to embrace fun activities, wholesome rides , Outdoor activities , campfires, laughter, advice, someone to be a sounding board for them, a shoulder to cry on and THE same ESCAPE AND FREEDOM from the world of illness, sadness and sickness that had become their normal. For Pete’s Sake truly changed me as a person, making me realize that asking for help and excepting help was not a terrible thing. This is the one of the most fabulous nonprofits I’ve ever encountered. I am now in a position to support this group and have become lifelong friends with some of the volunteers I have met there! For Pete ‘s Sake and the Woodloch resort have an extraordinary spark In making our world a better place! Cheryl Cummings
