Programs: Healthy living: at the ymca of south hampton roads, we enhance the quality of life in our community by helping individuals, kids, teens, families and seniors improve their health and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. The y promotes healthy lifestyles by making it easy, accessible and affordable to all. The ymca also collaborates with local health care partners and national organizations to focus on the prevention of chronic diseases and give people the resources and support they need, whether their goal is to maintain wellness, reduce the risk of chronic disease or reclaim good health. Programs such as the diabetes prevention program and livestrong at the ymca, not only educates participants on a healthy lifestyle, but empowers them to lead fuller lives. The ymca served 76,090 members in health and wellness programs at 18 different locations throughout coastal virginia and northeast north carolina in 2017. Group exercise classes served an average of 62,483 participants per month through 68,804 gex classes. Ymca of south hampton roads has engaged participants in all areas of health and wellness: * 6,036 youth and adults participated in a variety of sports programs such as basketball, soccer, flag football, ballet, pickle ball and cheerleading. * 696 homeschool activities were provided to youth to provide fitness, education and socialization. * an active older adult program 18 programs with 207 participants. * the diabetes prevention program enrolled 155 participants at 7 locations. * livestrong at the ymca: was provided at two locations and provided education and support to 30 participants. * transitions fitness therapy provided rehabilitation services to 27 participants at four locations. * clinical fitness program enrolled 42 participants at two locations. * the traveling y series provided 50 fitness events around the community and 550 people participated.
youth development: at the y, we believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That's why, through the y, we focus on programs that provide academic support, physical activity, healthy habits, social connectivity, family engagement and strong values. Y programs like summer camp, resident camp, before and after school care, the first tee of hampton roads all provide positive behaviors, better health, independence, new skills and lasting friendships. Youth also need positive adult and peer role models, and they need to feel physically and emotionally safe to thrive. The y puts highly trained, caring people in children's lives and nurtures them along their journey to adulthood, so they can become active, thriving and contributing members of society. In 2017, more than 9256 youth attended summer camp, 7,497 were enrolled in before and after school care, and over 600 youth learned life skills at the first tee of hampton roads. We had a wide variety of camps and child care programs serving our community in 2017: * 6,629 children participated in summer day camp. * ymca camp silver beach overnight camp enrolled 2,627 youth and teens. * before and after school care provided homework assistance, play time, and physical activity to 7,497 children. * golf camp at the first tee taught values like sportsmanship, honesty and perseverance to 610 participants. * 7,348 kids had a safe place to have fun at parent's night out while mom and/or dad enjoyed time to themselves. * preschool child care provided early learning and socialization skills to 245 children.
aquatics: swimming at the y helps people thrive- in and out of the water. Swim lessons provide kids and teens with the opportunity to set goals and achieve success in swim basics, stroke development, endurance, water safety and enjoy swimming as a form of exercise. Through swim lessons, swim teams, lap swimming, family swim and more, the y's highly trained instructors provide a safe environment for swimmers of all ages and abilities. In 2017, we provided 17,700 children swim lessons: * 18,346 children and adults enrolled in swim lessons * 98 children and adults learned swim skills and water safety in adaptive swim lessons * family swim and the outdoor aquatics centers are the core of family fun and togetherness during the summer months (not able to provide numbers) * 570 participated in swim team at various locations including princess anne y home of the 50 meter pool. * an average of 8,107 participants (per month) worked out in 10,163 water exercise classes * lifeguarding training and certifications classes served 591 people.
the primary program offerings not included in health & wellness, child care, and aquatics are adult and youth sports, and personal training. In 2017, over 8,000 youth participated in sports programs where they learned self confidence, teamwork, skills and character values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith. Over 2,000 people participated in personal training.
