Mission: Our mission: to put christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Our cause: to strengthen the foundation of communities. Our values: honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. Our focus areas: youth development (nurturing the potential of every child and teen); healthy living (improving people's health and well-being); and social responsibility (working with our community to give back).
Programs: Youth developmentthrough the anaheim family ymcas youth development programs, youth and teens have safe spaces to explore their unique talents and interests, take a greater interest in learning, and make smarter life choices. All ymca youth programs promote: honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. These building blocks of life are modeled by y staff and volunteers, and instilled in youth every day. Afterschool care: started in 1999, the anaheim achieves afterschool program is offered at 47 schools throughout anaheim (36 elementary, six junior high and five high schools) in partnership with the anaheim elementary, savanna, magnolia and anaheim union high school districts, city of anaheim, california department of education and orange county department of education. The program has received state and national recognition for its commitment to community collaboration and dedication to educational excellence. Anaheim achieves provides a safe, positive and enriching place for more than 11,200 students achieve in school and in life. Youth sports: through ymca youth sports programs, more than 3,400 youth learn about teamwork, becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they will carry with them throughout their lives. Youth sports programs and classes are held at the city community centers and gyms: downtown anaheim community center, downtown anaheim youth center, and west anaheim youth center: youth basketball introduces boys and girls ages 3-17 to basic basketball skills, rules, methods of playing, teamwork and character development. Bitty sports caters specifically to 3-6 year olds through three different sports: bitty basketball, bitty soccer and bitty t-ball. In youth gymnastics, children enjoy increased physical activity, stretching, discipline, and an incredible opportunity for parent and child bonding. Gymnastics classes include mini stars (ages 13), little stars (ages 3-4), beginning stars (ages 5-8), intermediate stars (ages 8-12), youth tumbling, and intramural sports. Performing arts: our performing arts programs for youth are open and welcoming to all and encourage, nurture and provide an outlet for creativity while strengthening the body, mind and spirit of all who are involved. These programs include: bitty ballet classes (ages 3-6), beginning ballet and tap (ages 5up), intermediate ballet classes (ages 6up), advanced ballet classes (ages 7-up), youth hip hop, polynesian dance, contemporary dance, parent & child dance, jazz dance, and musical theater class. Summer resident camps: the anaheim family ymca's first camp started in 1924, and continues today, impacting over 360 youth and teens each year. The program is run by trained volunteers and staff who have dedicated their lives to helping young people grow physically, mentally and spiritually. Ymca summer camps offer campers opportunities to build and strengthen positive character values and appreciate the differences in others. There are two weeklong resident camps: camp fox (ages 13-18, located on catalina island) and camp miehana (ages 7-12, located at camp arbolado in the san bernardino mountains). Day camps: ymca day camps provide opportunities for children when they are not in school during winter, summer and spring breaks. Day camps continue fun learning experiences until school starts again, helping to close the achievement gap that can result in youth falling back when they begin school again. Ymca day camps provide fun, safe, all-day learning environment. Swim lessons: at the y, swim lessons save and enrich lives. Youth learn not only how to have fun learning to swim, they gain lifelong confidence in and out of the water. Trained ymca staff teach essential swimming and water safety skills to more than 2,900 youth ages infant-17 years in a fun and positive environment. Adult classes are also available at select locations. Stem (science, technology, engineering, math): according to the u. S. Department of education, all young people should be prepared to think deeply and to think well so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world, both today and tomorrow. But, right now, not enough of our youth have access to quality stem learning opportunities and too few students see these subjects as possible careers. In response, the y is creating opportunities for youth to explore stem and develop decision-making, problem-solving and analytical skills by helping students learn to solve problems, spark curiosity and creativity, reshape failure, interest and prepare students for future stem careers and reinvent the way students see and feel about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Teen leadership: the anaheim family ymca has two core programs that promote leadership among teens: youth & government is a year-long leadership program where students team up to write a bill, conduct research, lobby for votes, hold mock elections, and debate their bill on the senate and assembly floors at our state capitol including using the state legislative and judicial chambers. The program builds values-based leadership and civic engagement for teens as they become active and responsible contributors to create meaningful change in their communities. The youth institute program is an innovative teen summer program that uses technology and service learning for promoting positive youth development, academic success and career readiness for high school students. The goals of the program are to increase academic, technology, social and life skills and to develop leadership and job training skills. Students participate in an intensive summer program. They then graduate from the summer program and attend the after school program during their school year where they have access to the latest technologies, academic assistance, emotional support, job internships, and community service opportunities. No technology skills are required to participate in youth institute.
healthy livingthe y is for healthy living. We believe that being healthy means more than being physically active. It's about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The y brings families closer together, encourages good health and connects people through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. Health advocacy: the anaheim family ymca has taken strong measures to combat obesity with active participation in ymca activate america, national partnerships with the center of disease control and serving as the lead coordinating agency for kaiser permanentes heal zone initiative (health eating active living). Since 2012, we have helped give parents peace of mind after school as students had safer routes and safer places to play, kept kids healthier by working with schools to increase physical education and physical activity during and after the school day, and helped families put nutritious food on the table by working with our local neighborhood market to bring fresh fruits and vegetables where healthy food options were scarce. Heal helped strengthen our relationship with new and current partners and residents, and expand our capacity through trainings and resident-led projects. Partners include the city of anaheim, kidhealthy, northgate markets, kaiser permanente, higher ground, anaheim city school district, anaheim union high school district, latino health access, as well as youth and adult resident leaders. The anaheim family ymca is also a funded partner of the orange county community action partnership pich (partners in community health) grant, to advance policy and system changes in healthy beverage and food consumption, increased physical activity, and communications. Hepa standards (healthy eating physical activity): in response to a call by first lady michelle obama and the partnership for a healthier america, the y has expanded its longtime commitment to supporting healthy living by adopting a set of healthy eating and physical activity (hepa) standards. Based, in part, on years of research with key partners, the hepa standards will build a healthier future for our nations children by creating environments rich in opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity. Health, well-being and fitness: the ymca has many programs that engage youth and adults to get active through sports and fitness. Family time: providing opportunities for every family to build stronger bonds, achieve greater work/life balance, and become more engaged with their communities. social responsibilitythe y is for social responsibility, where we unite people around the importance of giving back. We are committed to supporting our neighbors and providing opportunities for kids, adults and families to get involved in their community through giving, volunteering, advocating, and getting involved in meaningful ways. We work with volunteers, donors and collaborative partners that span countywide to impact nearly over 20,000 youth, teens and adults annually. Giving: the generosity of others is at the core of our existence and is the reason we are able to give back to the communities we serve. We continually engage funders to help us address critical needs in our community; needs like school-readiness, water safety, safe spaces, health and connections. Through the generosity of our donors and the ys work in the community, we have provided thousands of youth scholarships to ensure that young people have the opportunity to participate in the ys character-building programs. Community support comes through several opportunities for businesses and residents to learn about the y and donate to our cause, including our annual support campaign, ymca charity golf classic, i heart oc and other giving opportunities. We view all our donors as partners in our impact and we focus on continual donor stewardship and recognition. Among our funding partners is accelerate change together (act), collaboration between disney, angels, ducks, and orange county community foundation. Through act, we have helped provide access and support to teens to be part of camp fox and youth & government. Volunteering: the ymca is volunteer-founded, volunteer-based, and volunteer-led. Volunteers are at the heart of every ymca, and that s why ymcas are at the heart of community life in more than 10,000 communities nationwide. At the anaheim family ymca, volunteers have opportunities to give back in time and expertise through sports, camp, academics, and enrichment programs, and numerous other activities. Volunteers of the y: lead our boards of directors and committees; raise funds to ensure the y is accessible to all members of the community; coach our sports teams and teach many of our classes; motivate and support youth in building the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals; extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier; advocate for the ys efforts to influence policies and initiatives that positively impact societal issues of importance to the nation, and your community; and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Social services: at the y, we work collaboratively to make sure every child, family and community has what they need to achieve their best. In anaheim, we coordinate community service projects and collaborate with a host of organizations to connect people to important community resources. Collaboration: the anaheim family ymca has a demonstrated history of effectively collaborating with community leaders, organizations and policymakers, including an award-winning after-school collaboration and active involvement to building stronger, healthier communities. Working in collaboration with hundreds of partners, the y has built a culture of collaboration that positions the y as a trusted convener to address our communitys most critical needs: safe spaces (keeping youth safe after school from gangs and other negative influences); water safety (preventing drowning, the second leading cause of accidental death in kids 1-14); health (increasing access to healthy eating and physical activity to prevent obesity and related chronic disease); learning (closing the achievement gap, preventing summer learning loss, promote 21st century skills) and connections (connecting youth, adults and families to the community and resources). The anaheim family ymca is also among the few ys across the nation selected to pilot national collaborative projects in stem (science, technology, engineering, math), early learning readiness, and ymca togetherhood resident leadership initiative. The anaheim ymca is also in the working group of network anaheim, a collaboration of public and private entities and residents, which has removed traditional organizational boundaries in favor of a single, more easily accessible service delivery system.
