Mission: This organization exists to create opportunities for young people from diverse racial, ethnic, geographic and economic backgrounds to work together to develop a responsible media voice; it's program encourages teens to cross barriers in the region's fragmented society to produce the newspaper Young D.C.; the teens develop skills for college and career; Young D.C. readers gain a new understanding of teens throughout the region.
Programs: We maintain a newsroom for teens to work independently. Young D.C. gives presentations -- typically in low-income neighborhoods -- at schools and recreation sites on journalism, media and civic engagement. We conduct workshops and seminars for teens who wish to join the Young D.C. staff. The teen staff publishes and distributes the newspaper Young D.C. We maintain a "coaches collaborative" of working and former professional journalists to coach teens who are tackling stories they find challenging. We develop partnerships with other nonprofits and foundations to further the Young D.C. mission. The newspaper has an estimated readership of 25,000. Outreach and presentations involves over 1,000 teens each year. Up to 100 students become engaged producing the newspaper each year.
