Mission: The mission of You Can Make It, Inc. is to provide shelter and supportive services for homeless people with economic and/or dependency issues in order to help them obtain self-sufficiency
Target demographics: The target population served at YCMI-IH is women and children that have become homeless due to domestic violence, family dispute, lack of sufficient funds, natural fire or disaster, drug/alcohol abuse, and/or no affordable housing etc. With our various Englewood site locations, YCMI-IH now services between 900 to over 1000 homeless women and children and 50 men per year. The ages of our homeless children are from newborn to teens. We have 95% of our participants coming from the metropolitan area of Chicago; 5% come from surrounding suburbs. Our demographics include: African American 98%, Caucasian 2%; Females 65% Males 35% Disabled 20% Youth 65% Elderly 5%.
Geographic areas served: The target neighborhood includes locations in the 16th Ward, known as the New City area and in Englewood. The New City/Englewood area and surrounding areas are some of the most poverty stricken areas in the city of Chicago. Englewood is one of the 77 official community areas of Chicago and has a population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants. Englewood is bordered by 55th Street on the north, 75th Street on the south, Western Ave on the west, and State St on the east. Both the CTA Red Line and Green Line run through Englewood, as well as the Dan Ryan Expressway.
