My 13 year old son is a member of the Yorktown Teen Center since last year. Prior to joining the YTC, my son was a little on the intraverted side. Since joining the YTC, he has made a ton of friends, and looks forward to spending as much time as possible at YTC. One of his favorite memories is going to the METS game last summer. I have two older sons and a younger son that will definitely become a member once he is old enough. I look forward to many years of enjoyment for my children. Thank you Helena and the Yorktown Teen Center! -Adriana B.

I'm very grateful to have the Yorktown Teen Center in my community, my 13 year old loves going there, whether it's to play basketball in the gym or just to hang out in the lounge with friends. It is wonderful to have a safe place for the kids to go.

My son (now age 13) started going to the Yorktown Teen Center about 18 months ago, and he loves it. It's a chance for him to hang out with his friends in a safe environment. There are so few recreational places for teens these days that the Teen Center is a valuable asset to the community. There are lots of activities for the teens (basketball, billiards, fitness and training, along with video and board games). In addition, there are older teens (ages 15-18) that come to the center, which sets an important example to the younger members. It's been very gratifying to watch kids of all ages get along and learn to work together, and more so to see them welcome and encourage new members to participate. As a volunteer, I have really enjoyed helping out at the teen center and getting to know the kids. As members, they are respectful of each other and the ground rules established for the teen center -- this alone is testimony to its value to the community.

We tend to hear a great deal of negative press about teens today, and I have nothing but great things to say about The Yorktown Teen Center, and the positive role the teens that attend that center project. Helena & her Volunteers are doing some wonderful things to keep our teens busy, productive, and assisting in turning them into responsible adults. I only wish we had a Yorktown Teen Center in every town!

The Yorktown Teen Center is the epicenter of our local teens' artistic expression and free, "un-adult-erated" peer interaction. It's Director, Helena Rodriquez, and her board & staff have assured a clean, safe environment to produce an easily accessible, comfortably equipped & contemporary-designed, secure & well-monitored resource for our families teens. To experience this essential community gathering-place, you will enjoy amazing young creativity (as in musical, photographic / cinematic, and artistic talent bursting with authenticity), physical activity, and well-prepared, student-designed community service & interaction. This opportunity for our adolescents only comes about through the directorship which respects and encourages youthful potential. The governing body can only continue through regular funding. Where will this come from?

My daughter participates in every monthly open mic that is hosted by the Teen Center. Although every performance is special to her, there was one particular night that changed her life forever. After she sang at one of the open mics, an older teen w/ autism approached her & w/ his electronic pad & told her that as soon as he heard her voice he totally calmed down. Needless to say, this brought tears to her eyes & at that moment she truly realized the direct impact music has on people's lives. Since then, she has volunteered as a "music therapist" with the high school's Life Center & has touched each & everyone of those special kids with her talent. Without these experiences she would not have been empowered to pursue music therapy in college next fall. So, as you can see, if it wasn't for the Teen Center none of this would have happened. They are a small group of selfless, dedicated & caring people who have done amazing things for the teens, both big & small.
