Life changing indeed, I do not think anyone can argue against it! I've been around since the conception of The First Friday's Open mic, and before the Teen Center, The Boys & Girls Club of America was located at the YCCC, where the Teen Center currently is, and Helena was a brilliant part of both, and bridged the two masterfully. The community has a place to take their kids to part take in multiple activities such as basketball in the gym, but more personally, I've experienced the magic of the Open Mic first hand. We started the open mic in 2009, and it would go to bring in an incredible amount of people throughout the years, both great local musicians and great people! As a local musician, it given me a great opportunity to just roll into town and sport a couple new songs or ideas to bounce off of friends. I've never had a negative experience with the Teen Center and I personally know that I would not be who I am today without the experiences I've had with them. If I think about it, many of my most accomplished songs can be attributed to looking forward to playing them at the Open Mic and also from the positive and encouraging influences of my peers. We're all lucky to have such great talent in our area, and the Yorktown Teen Center has provided a place for us to call home thanks to Helena and the loving staff.
