Mission: The ymca of iredell county is a unique organization because it deals with a wide cross section of the population of iredell county. There is no other membership organization in our community that serves such a diverse group of people. Our facilities are utilized by people from all socio-economic levels, races, religions and ages. Our programs are based on the philosophy that everyone needs to develop themselves in spirit, mind, and body. Our programs are utilized by those at the peak of good physical condition as well as those who have severe physical and mental limitation. Among our members are people with terminal illnesses who feel that exercise is a way to extend their lives and those in the best of health who feel that exercise and fitness enhances their lives. Programs: The health and fitness program provides fitness, sports and aquatic activities. Fitness activities consist of over 100 exercises classes each week and we provide four different workout areas. Fitness provides a team of trained and knowledgeable professionals to assist our members in cardio vascular and strength training equipment. Over 11,000 people have been provided fitness activities this year. The sports activities provide youth and adults with organized team sports competition. We provide a fun and safe environment for members and non-members to participate in various sporting activities. This enhances the competitive spirit and improves self-esteem. Sports collaborate with local churches, schools and other organizations to provide sports activity to the community. Over 2,400 people participated this year in these collaborations. Aquatic activities provide swim lessons,water exercise and water safety classes. Education and participation in aquatics helps to build endurance, teach and improve swimming skills and teach individuals how to be safe in and around the water. Over 11,000 people have been provided aquatic activities this year. The health and fitness program's goal is to educate and assist members with improving their overall fitness level and promote the ymca's mission to help grow in spirit, mind and body.
the family and open door program. The ymca offers a variety of programs for the entire family, but deals mostly with children involved in after school, child care, fun camp and summer camp programs. The programs offered are designed to develop the child and strengthen the family unit. We focus on assisting the children to grow personally, while we create opportunities that will build self-esteem. The curriculum includes the following: arts & crafts; christian emphasis with prayer and devotionals; character development; homework & reading; nutritional and health snacks; opportunity to belong; physical fitness; safety and sports. In making these services available to everyone regardless of ability to pay we have an open doors program that is designed to provide financial assistance for those in need. People that are identified are provided a sliding fee scale based on household income and expenses. The above family program had over 13,000 participants this year. Over 1,200 individuals participated in open door program.
