Mission: The fund seeks to improve and develop inmate capabilities and rehabilitation by encouraging the expansion of private sector prison industries. The fund provides venture capital to selected companies which productively employ and educate prison inmates.
Programs: Heartland project - the fund purchased a china decorating company in 2003. In 2005, the company was moved to a fund owned 16,000 sq ft building in topeka, kansas. The fund's expenses consisted primarily of real estate taxes, insurance, and mortgage interest on the building in which heartland operates. Despite the hard work of the inmates/employees, economic circumstances dictated the closing of the plant in the fall of 2010. During that time of operation, 32 inmates had the opportunity to acquire skills & confidence, help their families, and save money for release.
general consulting - the fund provides consulting and educational services at no charge to a wide array of private sector companies, legislators, corrections professionals, and the general public on the benefits of private sector prison industry (pspi). The fund assists pspi's in establishing inmate employee operations. In addition, the fund maintains data on our model programs, tracking inmate/employee earnings and contributions back to society, as well as recidivism (covering a 30 year time frame).
children's justice alliance / parenting inside out - partnering with the children's justice alliance of portland, or, the fund brought pio (a parenting skills training program for incarcerated parents) to kansas inmates. The program is initiated in three kansas facilities.
continue to make a strong effort to search, select, and partially fund a struggling light manufacturing company to relocate to topeka, kansas, and employ women inmates from tcf.
