I have watched the Winnebago Area Literacy Council (WALC) grow over the course of 25 years. For 2 years I served as a teacher for one of their English classes and for the past 9 years I have served on the Board. WALC was for a long time a tiny agency housed in the Oshkosh Public Library with one full time director and only a couple part time staff, serving people mostly through one to one tutoring. Now in 2025, they have 2 locations, 6 half to full time staff and several part time teachers. They still offer one to one tutoring, but also have several English classes, including on-site functional work English classes; a Road to Work program, and Learning Circles on topics relevant to our mission. WALC is accomplishing so much more today and continue to fill community needs in a unique way! The staff are amazing and have the biggest hearts. They care about the people they serve and help them achieve their personal goals. I am proud to be connected to the Winnebago Area Literacy Council.

I have volunteered for 10 years with this organization. Literacy is vital not only to fully participate in our democracy, but it is also vital for financial independence and fuels our economy. I am so grateful to the many volunteers and paid professionals who commit themselves to this endeavor!
