Causes: Food, Food Programs
Mission: We strive to increase access to fresh, healthy, locally-grown food for all Georgians.
Results: Founded in 2009, WWG launched as a statewide chapter of Wholesome Wave National’s Double Value Coupon Program to double SNAP/EBT benefits spent at Georgia’s local farmers markets. Today, that program is known as Georgia Fresh for Less and has provided more than $2 million in fresh, local food to Georgia’s food-insecure families. Since 2009, the Georgia Fresh for Less program has grown from three farmers markets to 60 farmers markets and farms in 2017. In 2015, WWG launched the Southeast’s first Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program® to promote affordable access to fruits and vegetables and healthy eating in underserved communities through partnerships with healthcare providers, community organizations, and fresh produce retailers. Today, the Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program operates at five healthcare sites, including Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital.
Target demographics: increase access to fresh, local food for low-income Georgians.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 10,000+ low-income Georgians and their families
Geographic areas served: Georgia
Programs: WWG makes healthy, nourishing choices accessible for Georgia’s food insecure families through the Georgia Fresh for Less and Fruit & Vegetable Prescription programs. The Georgia Fresh for Less program matches SNAP/EBT dollars--dollar for dollar--at 60 participating farmers markets across Georgia. When you spend $10, you get $20 worth of fresh, local food. You’ll pay less for fresh and local food that is higher quality and more nutritious. Shopping at your local farmers markets or farmer puts your money back into your community. The Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program promotes affordable access to fruits and vegetables and healthy eating in under-served communities through partnerships with healthcare providers, community organizations and fresh produce retailers. Through the program, healthcare providers give families innovative prescriptions that can be spent on fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets.
