Mission: Founded in 1972 to further coastal environmental knowledge and appreciation, the Wetlands Institute is surrounded by 6,000 acres of pristine saltmarsh. As an environmental education center the Institute has a commitment to promote understanding of this environment. Focusing on the salt marsh, we teach why this ecosystem is important, and the significance of the interaction between it and man. The Institute hosts research projects that collect base-line data from which trends in populations of marine life will be gathered. The Wetlands Institute, located in the heart of the Jersey Shore resort area, offers "hands-on" activities, exhibits, and saltwater aquarium to the general public.
Programs: To educate the public (school children, college students & adults) on the function and values of wetlands & coastal ecosystems throughout the state of new jersey. To research the ecosystem function and keystone and flagship species resulting in and utilizing coastal & wetlands ecosystems. To create stewardship and conservation projects and programs to preserve and protect coastal and wetland ecosystems.
