Mission: WGLAR originated in 1997 as a chapter under a national rescue group. In 1999, WGLAR became their own entity and is still in the growth process. We are a small group of volunteers with two major goals. 1. save the lives of unwanted Akita's and place them into new loving homes, and 2. educate the public regarding the Akita breed. The first goal is attained through a stringent evaluation process of both the dog (i.e, temperament evaluation, health screening/tests as needed and spaying or neutering prior to adoption) and screening the potential new family (e.g., application completed, references verified, home visit, dog introduction to entire family and a signed contract). We fund our operation by donations, grants, raffles and adoptions. We meet our second goal of public education through telephone consultations of inquiries and by setting up information booths at pet stores, dog shows and pet fairs. A volunteer is always available to answer questions regarding the Akita dog.
