Mission: One of the first environmental organizations in New York State to be headed by people of color, WE ACT was founded in 1988 in response to the air pollution and other environmental threats created by the poor management of the North River Sewage Treatment Plant and the operation of six diesel bus depots in Harlem and Northern Manhattan. WE ACT works to empower local residents to impact public policy and improve the community's quality of life. We fulfill our mission through policy advocacy, community organizing, youth education, health research, public education, promotion of sustainable development and participation on government committees.
