Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The Welfare Warriors are mothers and children in poverty who have joined together to make our voices heard in all policies affecting families in poverty, the larger community, and the Earth... Our mission is to create a voice for mothers in poverty to work for systemic change in the welfare, legal and legislative policies and practices affecting families in poverty, the larger community and the Earth. Welfare Warriors fight for Government Guaranteed Child Support for all dependent minors. We advocate for the reduction of corporate welfare and an increase in family-supporting jobs, not destructive "make work" solutions to poverty. Our message is: "Paid work, not Slave Work." Through street activism, advocacy, and our newspaper, Welfare Warriors educate and agitate for community recognition that motherwork IS work, which must be measured and included in all government budgets as well as prioritized in the community and the workplace. We advocate for an increase in government support for families and workers and all dependent people: young, old, sick, injured, and all under-employed people: low-income workers, temporary workers, unemployed workers, injured workers. We fight for their right to have a secure income and to survive in dignity. Our mission includes the right of all dependent people, not just children, to good caregivers. All of our many publications and public actions address and discuss the underlying problems that cause poverty: racism, classism, sexism and corporate greed. Welfare Warriors work gives mothers and children in poverty the opportunity to influence official decisions, policies and laws. We actively protest the devastation being caused by "welfare reform."
