Causes: Human Services, Neighborhood Centers
Mission: The washington park citizens association, inc. (the organization) is a nonprofit organization incorporated in the state of rhode island in 1969. The organization operates washington park community center, which provides childcare programs for youth under the age of eighteen, as well as social services for neighborhood residents over eighteen who reside in the washington park area of providence, rhode island. The organization is supported primarily through state government grants and contracts, and program fees.
Programs: The washington park community center, a multipurpose human service agency, offers a variety of programs and social services to the local community. Our licensed childcare programs include infant/toddler daycare, pre-school, and before & after school programs. These are year round programs, providing a nurturing and educational environment for children who need care while their parents are at work. Our before & after school program serves children 5 to 12 after school each day, as well as programs and summer camps to cover the gaps when school is out, so children are safe and monitored always. We provide assistance with homework, as well as reading and math tutorials. Youth are expected to excel at school. Though emphasis is on academics, a variety of group and individual activities are offered to stimulate creative and athletic talents - arts and crafts, basketball or soccer, outdoor play, physical fitness equipment (jump ropes, hula hoops, etc. ), educational field trips and board games.
the daycare program was opened in 1981 as the first licensed infant and toddler child care center in rhode island. The program is open full time, monday - friday. Children are cared for in groupings according to age: infants under 18 months, toddlers 18 months to 3 years, and preschoolers 3 to 5 years. Our curriculum is based on the eight domains of the rhode island early learning standards and designed to ensure each child (age appropriate) that leaves us is kindergarten ready. Lesson plans are individualized according to each child's needs. Each child is assessed three times per year in the areas of social, emotional, cognitive, and fine and gross motor skills. Weekly reports are sent home to keep parents updated on their child's progress; a log is kept on each infant to keep parents abreast of their child's activities during each day and as a communication aid. Our child care program meets all state regulations.
