Mission: The academy's mission is to use the sports of baseball and softball as vehicles to foster positive character development, academic achievement, and improved health among youth from underserved communities in washington, d. C. By creating an enduring environment imbued with high-quality youth development programming and grounded in the positive values of baseball and softball, the academy utilizes trained and committed coaches and academic mentors to support youth in developing the skills and resiliency necessary to ovecome the challenges of poverty, reach their full academic potential, and lead long and healthy lives.
Programs: After-school academy program: the academy offers an after-school program for students in grades three-six in the district of columbia's wards 7 and 8. The program operates about four hours per day for three days per week during the school year. The program provides scholar-athletes with a healthy snack; study hall tutoring sessions; literacy, math, and science mentoring; nutrition and cooking education; and baseball and softball instruction. Volunteer mentors assist in implementing the program, using the power of strong interpersonal relationships to enhance the impact of the curriculum.
summer academy program: during the summer, the academy conducts a program for the same student population in wards 7 and 8. This program runs for six weeks and operates for the full day, monday-friday. Though the summer academy focuses more heavily on baseball and softball development and opportunities, it also helps students improve academic achievement and avoid summer learning loss through continued exposure to the academy's curriculum.
community outreach services: the academy is dedicated to economic development and community-building in wards 7 and 8. Accordingly, it also participates in other community-based projects. In addition, the academy allows use of its facilities for community events.
