This organization attracts caring instructors. They are vested in the success of their students.

The students become a part of the organization, not just students. They feel empowered to continue with their education, not simply stop at functional literacy.

One in Five DC Adults is Illiterate. Washington DC is among the nation’s most literate and illiterate cities.

The Washington Literacy Center (WLC) serves adults residents of Washington who don't want to be in that 1/5. In less than a year WLC's program takes an adult from not being able to read at the third grade level to a level that enables them to complete a job application. The simple act of completing a job application puts people on the road from poverty to employment.

What impresses me about WLC is their spirit of innovation. In the past three years they have adopted a new approach to adult literacy - The Wilson Reading System. Since adopting this method adult learner performance has risen dramatically from below the city average to above average. I expect the continued investment in this method combined with more social support and transportation scholarships will continue to help improve results.

Due to the pressing need to expand their services and the efficacy of the program I highly recommend you support the Washington Literacy Center.
