Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Equestrian, Health, Health Care, Philanthropy, Special Olympics, Sports, Voluntarism Promotion

Mission: Our mission is to provide a place where special needs and at risk individual veterans and their families can come to gain the benefits of interacting with horses, developing responsibility, through encouragement and healing through helping. Provide community volunteer opportunities to allow typical and extra special people to interact and learn together.

Results: We have been serving Brevard County for seven years and work with Colleges nationwide and local schools and organizations to provide volunteer opportunities and service learning hours. Our goal is to reach as many children and adults sent to us and give them the experience to ride and care for horses, interact and encourage one another and provide volunteer experiences to promote accomplishment in an hour, day or semester. Walk on Water is a Hippotherapy program that works with At Risk and Special Needs individuals from age 3 to 18 through Physical Education, agriculture education, health education and Anatomy and Physiology of farm animals. Children and their families participate in the program together riding and grooming horses, learning language through obstacle courses and learning practical skills of gardening through the agriculture program. Our children with Autism planted their first garden with pumpkins. They have one pumpkin growing so far!! They also learn the benefits of healthy eating for health and healing purposes. The obstacle course consists of tires, cones, soccer balls and nets, hula-hoops and bean bags. Children have to display understanding of ordinal numbers, letters words and shapes as they complete the course. Not only are they obtaining educational benefit but learning how a healthy body leads to healthy minds. On horseback students show riding skills such as turning right and left, navigating cones and barrels, placement of horse to drop objects into buckets and using proper cues to direct horses. Chickens are used in therapy as well and nature walks complete the day to explore the great outdoors and share their findings. Walk on Water gives the children a great sense of self-esteem and confidence in their abilities. The program offers opportunities to all types of children to achieve on their own level at their own pace. I think Walk on Water offers hope to these students who find it difficult to learn in typical school environments and give them the chance to learn in an alternative setting that’s nurturing and supportive. My son has autism and really benefits from riding horses and receiving Equine Assisted Therapy. We have been visiting Walk on Water for the past few months now and have had an outstanding experience with all of the staff involved, from the director to the trainers and volunteers. They are very caring and always ensure that my son has the best possible experience. I highly recommend this organization.

Everyone involved in this ministry has such a heart for making people feel good about themselves and providing a great experience with the animals. Anyone coming to Walk on Water becomes part of the family and is cared about and loved on. Providing horseback riding lessons was a Christmas gift for my granddaughter. She was 4 at the time of starting the lessons in January. Not only is she experiencing lessons with the horses and trainers, she is able to interact and play with other children who have special needs and this gives her a more rounded and accepting view of the world. This is a great family to be a part of!

Walk on Water ministries is a wonderful place where where kids can go and get help with all kinds of physical/emotional issues. The interaction between the horses and special needs kids is amazing! I have been friends with the director for 30 years and I can assure you that the helping the children with whatever issues they may have is job one.

Walk on Water Ministries, aka..Walk on Water Equine Assisted Therapy is an outstanding and dedicated organization. The entire staff is caring and attentive to all ages of riders who come to experience the joy and love of riding and learning about horses. I have personally watched over the years, many children smile and experience immense joy when up on a horse. Whether the rider has special needs or not; the horses are gentle and easy to ride for all levels. The staff is attentive to safety at all times.
My daughter started riding and attending the summer camp when she was 5 years old, before a family trip to Montana, just so that she would be more comfortable on horseback. She has continued to attend every summer camp/bible study for the past 7 years. She looks forward to riding the same horses and to meeting all the new rescued horses that have been helped by those associated with Walk on Water Ministries. She has learned not only to love riding, but also has learned about the work and dedication involved in the care of these animals. She wants to share what she has learned by volunteering with the organization. This example speaks volumes that someone who grew up with the services of this organization, now wants to volunteer there.
I would highly recommend this organization as a safe and secure place with a staff dedicated to promoting the love of horsemanship at all levels. I pray that this organization continues to provide the community with a symbol of God's love through the use of their horses.
