Mission: Visiting neighbors, inc is a non-profit organization established in 1972, to serve the homebound elderly of new york and is dedicated to keeping them a vital part of the community. Its two main programs are friendly visiting, providing volunteer visitors to isolated elderly, and shop and escort, helping elderly to medical visits, to shop, bank, etc. Other programs inlcude extensive referral and remembering special occasion programs.
Programs: The organization provides five core type of services as follows: (1) escort - provides shopping and errand services. Volunteers provided approximately 2,450 units of service (each one way trip). (2) friendly visits - provides the elderly clients with companion visits. Volunteers provided approximately 9,100 visits. (3) health advocacy - provides support during clients hospital stays and follow up at home after hospital stay, emergency preparedness, in-home safety checks, information on free and low cost health services, health counseling, liaison between the client and health care providers, providing health education materials and emotional support and encouragement, approximately 690 hours. (4) information and referral services - employees respond to individuals requesting information . During the year, 3,570 calls were received and responded to.
