Mission: The Hmong are Laotian hilltribe refugees who fought for America during the Vietnam-era conflict in Southeast Asia. North Carolina is home to the fourth-largest population of Hmong in the United States. The Hmong have suffered ethnic cleansing since the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam, and still are persecuted and killed today in their homeland of Laos, and neighboring Thailand. Many immigrants do not speak English, are not literate in their own language, and struggle with poverty. Many are underserved, primarily because they face a sharp cultural divide in their new home.
