Causes: Human Services, Neighborhood Centers
Mission: United community centers (ucc) is a social justice driven community center that has been working with residents in the east new york (eny) neighborhood of brooklyn for over 60 years. Our mission is to work together with residents of all ages and cultures to address our communitys challenges, celebrate its strengths, and provide services that improve lives. We have organized and advocated for child care, environmental justice, reproductive justice, immigration, transportation, affordable housing, and food justice.
Programs: Day care center: year-round/full-day early childhood education program for 118 children 2-4 years old
our current programs are: 1. Immigration assistance and esol classes 2. East new york farms! An urban agriculture and food justice program that includes an intensive paid youth internship for 35 community youth3. Protecting the east, a community sexual health and hiv prevention program that provides a paid peer education internship opportunity for up to 12 youth annually. In addition, ucc is actively involved in coalitions to address local and city-wide issues such as the campaign for children, a campaign for salary parity in early childhood education, and the universal free school lunch initiative. On the community level we are on the steering committee of the coalition for community advancement progress for east new york/cypress hills, created in response to the rezoning of eny and development of more than 5,000 housing units.
