Nonprofit Overview
Mission: Our purpose is simple- to provide a bridge between the under achieving students in the public school system in Maryland with students who have a proven track record of success. We will pair older, successful students with underachieving ones to encourage academic growth and ensure a sustaining environment so that success is measured and not just imagined. Our Mentors will not only act as tutors for the younger children, but as a resource outside of the academic environment and liaisons to Montgomery County and the vast resources they provide to underprivileged children. We hope that by opening the door to organized sports leagues and arts and science programs, while teaching productive study habits and providing positive role models, students enrolled with TFAN will flourish both in and out of the classroom. Tutor For America Now constantly strives to help kids become productive and independent learners, as well as grow into healthy and engaged members of our community. We want to make education accessible to all children, but we know that this requires more work than can simply be done by a classroom with a teacher. Our volunteers work to provide the necessary support to complement the work of our public school system.
Target demographics: elementary school students
Direct beneficiaries per year: 50 students at 4 different sites, although we are currently expanding our program.
Geographic areas served: Montgomery County, Maryland
Programs: tutoring and mentoring services to provide supportive role models, work towards academic advancement, and engage disadvantaged children in positive community programs.
