Causes: Disaster Aid, Disaster Preparedness & Relief Services
Mission: TCEP's mission is twofold: 1) help residents of Topanga and surrounding communities prepare for disasters; 2) Gather, verify and post incident information to our website, Twitter and telephone hotline during emergencies such as wildfires, earthquakes and floods.
Target demographics: We focus on disaster preparedness and communications during emergencies
Geographic areas served: Topanga Canyon, California and surrounding Santa Monica Mountains communities
Programs: TCEP has provided emergency preparedness services and information to the communities in the greater Santa Monica Mountains for over a quarter century. TCEP co-chairs with the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management the Topanga Emergency Management Task Force, a coalition of County and state first responders working together with Topanga volunteer organizations to create an emergency plan for Topanga. The Topanga plan is used as a model for other mountain communities across LA County. TCEP holds community meetings on emergency communications, helping residents develop back up communications for receiving emergency alerts and evacuation notifications and explaining how to build emergency kits and Go-Bags. When wildfires, earthquakes or floods threaten the area, TCEP uses its trusted relationships with LA County Fire and Sheriff to gather and verify up to date information which we then push out to the public through our website, Twitter and telephone Hotline. We operate our own ham radio network within Topanga to help us communicate even when grid power is out.
