Mission: Founded in 1975, the Thoreau Institute is dedicated to finding ways to protect public lands, wildlife habitat, urban livability, and other environmental values using incentives and markets. The Institute does policy research and then follows up on that research with educational programs and by facilitating consensus groups of private landowners, environmental leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders. The Institute works throughout the U.S., but particularly in the West, and also has several projects in southern Africa.
