Causes: Homeless & Housing, Low-Income & Subsidized Rental Housing
Mission: To provide a place where people with intellectual disabilities are nurtured and valued, a place where they will be engaged in all aspects of their lives, learning and working alongside lifelong friends, family and members of the community.
Programs: The village community is a non-profit organization, founded in 2013 by parents of young adults with intellectual disabilities, with the purpose of providing high quality, engaging experiences to our members so that they can continue to live happy, healthy, productive lives. We have a commitment to building relationships with members, member families, staff, and the broader community. As part of this mission, we serve as a partner with university of iowa medical, nursing, and graduate school programs, providing on-site learning and practicum opportunities to students interested in working with this population in a professional capacity. In 2017 we have worked diligently to maintain the maximum (3 year) certification from both carf international and the state of iowa department of human services. Our full-day program, which was launched in december of 2015, has operated at full capacity in 2017 and now has a waiting list. With our special olympics delegation, our members are participating in local, regional and state competitions. We have been recognized as a thought leader and continue to provide consultation to stakeholders and community partners on our model of service provision that has significantly less overhead and administrative costs than other similar service providers. This has translated to low staff turnover and a more positive member experience. We utilize best practices for service provision as well as business management to ensure we are sustainable over the long term. As a result, our financial performance once again exceeded our expectations in 2017. Due to changes with medicaid at the state level, specifically in regard to reimbursement rates for day habilitation, our financial future is less predictable for 2018. We are working with state legislators to help them understand the long-term impact these changes will have on our members and our program. Our 2018 budget reflects significant budget cuts and we are working to establish and secure additional sources of income.
