Nonprofit Overview
Mission: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
Results: Last year, we prevented more than 800 households from becoming homeless. About 9 in 10 were "first-time" recipients of assistance -- victims of job loss and extended unemployment. We focus on helping at-risk youth succeed and continue to send seniors to college from a neighborhood where less than half the adults have high school diplomas.
Target demographics: "At-risk" children and families in Durham, Orange, and Person counties, with special focus in the East Durham Childrens' Initiative area.
Direct beneficiaries per year: More than 5,000 receive financial or in-kind assistance for basic needs, or participate in our youth programs.
