Mission: MLCI was founded in 1999 to address the environmental and economic impact that Maine''s lakes have on our communities. We implement a strong experiential educational program around the state involving youth and adults in the protection and stewardship of lakes. Our program connects education, the environment, and the economy for the children, adults, and communities who participate in it.
Programs: Since its inception, MLCI has developed an award-winning Lake Science Education Program which is geared towards middle schools. We travel across the State of Maine to introduce students to the basics of lake science. This school program utilizes interactive components such as pioneering computer technology and field excursions to teach students about the workings of lakes. This science is taken a step further by addressing the human aspect. MLCI also acts a resource for lake associations and civic organizations. Our civic program provides a dynamic, hands-on education to members and to their community. This program is designed to give the layperson an introduction to lake ecology, land use, and environmental economics.
