Nonprofit Overview
Mission: The Lawyers’ Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation (LCCHP) is a nonprofit organization of lawyers, law students and interested members of the public who have joined together to promote the preservation and protection of cultural heritage resources in the United States and internationally through education and advocacy. We formed because we perceive a need for greater legal education and advocacy in the legislative, judicial and policy arenas.
Results: ADVOCACY As a legal organization, the Lawyers’ Committee is in an ideal position to be a successful advocate for the preservation of cultural heritage. We fill that role by submitting comments on pending federal and state legislation that may impact cultural heritage and joining other preservationist organizations in submitting amicus briefs in cases involving cultural heritage issues. We also comment on proposed bilateral agreements between the United States and other countries to restrict the import of undocumented archaeological and ethnological materials. Furthermore, we organized a coalition of preservationist organizations and submitted written testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee urging ratification of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, which the Senate voted to ratify in September 2008.
