Mission: The humane society veterinary medical association inc. (hsvma) was formed as a home for veterinary professionals who want to engage in direct care programs for animals in need and educate the public and others in the profession about animal welfare issues. Hsvma rural area veterinary services (hsvma-ravs), is the primary direct care program. Hsvma is also actively involved in advocating for better public policies for animals and advancing humane alternatives in veterinary education.
Programs: Ravs/direct care the humane society veterinary medical association inc. Promotes veterinary leadership in animal advocacy, public education and direct care to animals in need. Hsvma's main program areas include advocacy efforts to promote animal welfare, continuing education events that focus on welfare issues, and a direct care program called ravs (rural area veterinary services) that provides medical treatment for animals on native american reservations in the united states and remote locations abroad. Continued from part iii, line 4a during 2017, the ravs program operated 23 field clinics and outreach events, providing high quality, no-cost veterinary medical and surgical care for approximately 9,100 animals (for a total value of services provided of nearly $1. 8 million). Approximately 140 professional volunteers (veterinarians and veterinary technicians) participated in the ravs clinics, along with more than 200 veterinary and veterinary technician students.
advocacy and education during 2017, hsvma's membership grew to approximately 9,000 veterinary professional members (including veterinarians, veterinary technicians and veterinary students), and hsvma mobilized more than 2,000 veterinary professionals to actively participate in advocacy and education efforts in the animal welfare arena. Continued from part iii, line 4b in the advocacy realm, hsvma focused on recruiting veterinary support for welfare improvements related to farm animal welfare, animal cruelty reporting, wildlife protections and ending the abuse associated with puppy mills. Activities included collecting veterinary endorsements for legislation, providing veterinarians to testify in the legislative arena and speak with the media, and providing educational presentations on these issues. Hsvma also hosts a continuing education webinar series for veterinary professionals that focuses on animal welfare issues. During 2017, hsvma hosted six webinars on topics such as geriatric pets, providing care to low-income clients, separation anxiety and how obesity impacts animal welfare. Hsvma also has 32 archived webinars on animal welfare topics available for veterinary ce. Another hsvma focus area is outreach on the veterinary school campuses. During 2017, hsvma hosted approximately 50 presentations at veterinary schools, reaching more than 2,000 veterinary students on topics ranging from early-age sterilization and puppy mills to feral cats issues and field service work through the ravs program. Hsvma also sponsors a student chapter and representative program with representation on 21 campuses by year end.
